A Moral Compass

“Say among the nations, ‘The LORD reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”

Psalm 96:3

In 1963, when state-sponsored prayer was banned from public schools, people said the moral fiber of our nation was irreparably torn.

In 1974, after Richard Nixon formally resigned his position as president of the United States, people said the moral fiber of our nation was irreparably torn.

In 1998, after Bill Clinton was impeached on grounds of perjury, people said the moral fiber of our nation was irreparably torn.

Yesterday, when the current president of the United States was impeached for the second time, people said the moral fiber of our nation was irreparably torn.

And yet, here we stand, strong and unbroken. Pulled, certainly, by emotion. And impassioned, certainly, by politics.

But untorn.

You may doubt the veracity of that statement.

You have seen the news. You saw the election results. You have experienced the so-called “two Americas.”

But let me ask you this:

  1. Do you believe murder is wrong?

  2. Do you believe lying is wrong?

  3. Do you believe rioting is wrong?

So does 90% of your fellow citizenry.

We are closer to each other than we are to any generation in the past.

And here’s why: because the world is founded on secure moral principles, the unchanging character of God - which has some really significant repercussions for us.

Gold is good. Debt is bad. Those principles are universal and secure.

Hard work is good. Stealing is bad. Those principles are universal and secure.

Truth is good. Lying is bad. Those principles are universal and secure.

The world may seem crazy at times.

Debt might seem good. Stealing might seem good. Lying might seem good.

But they are not. And never will be.

We live in a world founded on principles that cannot be altered.

We shouldn’t ignore them.

We also shouldn’t lose our moral compass when the world seems upside down.

Truth can’t be changed. And it always wins in the end.
